Indicators of Child Sex Trafficking: Behavior Indicators of a Trafficker/Pimp
- Jealous, controlling, or violent. Brags about being violent and dangerous.
- Buys expensive gifts and owns expensive things. Brags about having money.
- Vague about their profession, and very open to talk about how much money he has.
- Often older than his younger companions and makes promises too good to be true.
Indicators of Child Sex Trafficking: Behavior Indicators of an individual being Trafficked or Groomed
KEY: Something has changed. There is something different. Something has changed.
- Hiding or concealing something: a phone. A bruise. a purse. Something has changed.
- Very nervous about certain phone calls from certain people. Tries to take the call privately.
- Unexplained absences from class or work; seems disconnected from family and friends.
- Overly tired, withdrawn, depressed, distracted or, "checked out" – like nothing really matters.
- Signs of emotional distress, rehearsed answers to questions.
- The way they dress changes. Maybe even gets a Tattoo, or a new Tattoo.
- Brags about making or having lots of money, and an older boyfriend, and new friends.
- Displays expensive clothes, accessories, shoes, purses, a new phone.
- Sexualized behavior, drug and/or alcohol use starts or increases.
- Signs of physical abuse such as bruises, cuts, or burn marks that they hide and don't talk about.
*Something has changed. Something is different. Get involved. Ask what is going on.
Don't interrogate. Don't judge. Try to understand what happened and why it happened.
Indicators of Child Sex Trafficking: Use of a Home, Motel, Commercial/Retail Business, Airbnb
- The home seems a bit isolated. Never see children playing outside in front yard.
- School age children are home during normal school hours.
- Seems like only women live there. Seems like mostly men are visiting the home or business.
- Different cars and trucks stopping by through-out the day and night.
One Person Has Power
Whether an Uber or Delivery Driver, or a neighbor, one person has the power to make the call.
If you suspect a Human Sex Exploitation or Sex Trafficking Situation
Never confront the suspected Trafficker or Pimp
- Never attempt a face-to-face conversation with a possible victim of Trafficking
- If you suspect Trafficking activity, quickly note your surroundings, including a description of persons, vehicles, etc
- Drive to a safe location and call 1-800-THE-LOST
- Call 911 if it's an emergency
